PhD opportunity with funding available for Indian students!

“Drivers and human dimensions of illegal fishing in India: behavioural insights
”

In partnership with Ashoka University and ZSL, I am currently looking for an Indian PhD student. This is a fully-funded position looking at fishers’ behavioural insights for incentivizing compliance.

The student will use semi-structured interviews with fisherfolk, surveys and observations of landings and markets, and a phenomenological study of domestic demand for shark meat. These methods will help us explore the influence of social factors in driving targeted shark fisheries and interaction with policy designed to encourage sustainable fishing across scales in Tamil Nadu and Kerala state. While focusing on a wide range of potential motivations for illegal fishing among these communities (e.g. traditional/cultural and economic), we will explore how non-compliant fishing behaviour might relate to different types of policies, governance (state vs community-led), awareness about rules and perceived fairness. In addition, we will also target consumers of shark products in rural vs urban areas in Tamil Nadu in order to assess demand for these products and more robustly develop an integrated understanding of this value chain from the source to the final consumer and motivations driving resource use.

Position primarily based at Ashoka University (India), with support from NOVA University (Portugal) and ZSL (UK). Supervisors: Dr Divya Karnad, Dr Claire Collins and myself (Dr Ana Nuno). Fully funded position with a monthly stipend, and travel and expenses paid (including international travel and local fieldwork assistants).

We’re looking for a motivated student that is keen to learn about new tools and apply them in a culturally sensitive manner in fishing communities. The student will need to be comfortable with travel (both national and international) and engaging with a broad variety of stakeholders. Good communication skills, and knowledge of Tamil/Malayalam are essential. Experience with using social science tools (e.g. surveys) and knowledge of fisheries and marine conservation issues are desirable.

If you'd like to find out more about this opportunity, please get in touch with Dr Divya Karnad as soon as possible!

For applications (deadline: 31st January), please submit to
Dr Divya Karnad:
- Cover letter (maximum 2 pages) explaining your suitability for the role based on the listed skills and experience above, with a section explaining your demonstrated ability or interest to conduct interdisciplinary research (Biology and the Social Sciences)
- Up to 2 examples of work (e.g. BSc or MSc thesis, scientific publications, news or magazine articles in English etc.)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Scores from any standardized examinations in India (NET, GATE etc.)
